Parusso Barolo 2018

‘Marco Parusso makes some of the most idiosyncratic wines in Barolo’

Antonio Galloni

We are delighted to offer you the 2018 releases from the famous Parusso winery in Barolo.

A family estate, dating back to 1901, Parusso is located between Monforte d’Alba and Castiglione Faletto. Today, there are 22 hectares of estate vineyards throughout Barolo including prestigious plots in Mariondino, Mosconi and Bussia.

A true innovator, Marco Parusso harvests late and leaves the grapes to rest for several days before crushing and whole bunch fermentation. The resulting wines are characterised by wonderful aromatics and lovely smooth textures. They are surprisingly approachable young but have the intensity and structure for long ageing.

Perarmando, named after founder of the company, is a blend from Mariondino, Mosconi and Bussia. Awarded a cracking 96 points from James Suckling, the 2018 ‘embraces the signature Parusso style that always puts an emphasis on elegant power and dark fruit’ says Monica Larner. This is an excellent value buy in our opinion.

Mariondino in Castiglione Falletto is a ‘bigger and more concentrated’ wine for Monica Larner, while the Bussia from Monforte d’Alba shows dark, spicy plum and supple cherry fruits – a hallmark of Parusso’s unique style. Also from Monforte, Mosconi has an exotic and powerful bouquet followed by an intense palate with supple black fruit notes and firm, yet perfectly integrated silky tannins -‘ a super-sensual Barolo…so tempting even now’ says Suckling!

A vintage which required tenacity and skill in the vineyards, favouring the best growers, Marco Parusso pulled out all the stops to produce these exciting 2018 Baroli.

Stock anticipated early Autumn. Please contact us soon as possible to purchase a case or two of these lovely wines.

2018 Barolo Perarmando, Parusso
£184 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘A rich nose, packed with aromas of ripe and dried red fruit, including heaps of wild strawberries. There’s fresh orange rind, too and on the savory side, notes of cloves, perfumed bark and brighter flowers. Full-bodied with a very silky but firm texture. The strawberry and citrus fruit is ingrained in the velvety tannins and the combination gives a very long finish. Twist of red licorice at the end. This is nicely structured and well balanced, but needs plenty of time. Try from 2026.’ 96 points, James Suckling

2018 Barolo Mariondino, Parusso
£280 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘The Parusso 2018 Barolo Mariondino is a bigger and more concentrated wine compared to the Perarmando. With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, it also has what tastes like riper, darker and more fleshed-out fruit flavors. This wine delivers lots of power (with 15% alcohol), stems, structure and large-scale tannins, as expected. It’s a lot to take in.’ 93 points, Monica Larner

2018 Barolo Bussia, Parusso
£410 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘The 2018 Barolo Bussia is slightly subdued (almost) compared to the other new releases from this estate, although you’d need to take that comment in context since all of Parusso’s wine bat above their weight. With 15% alcohol, this vintage shows dark fruit, spicy plum, cherry skin and potting soil. The Bussia is always a hallmark of Mark Parusso’s unique winemaking approach. Fruit comes from the Rocche and Munie vineyards in the Bussia MGA of Monforte d’Alba.’ 94 points, Monica Larner

2018 Barolo Mosconi, Parusso
£410 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘Wow. This is a super-sensual Barolo with wild black-fruit character, such as ripe elderberries and dried dates. Fresher notes of blood oranges, too. Balanced vanilla edge to the palate that coats the firm, grainy tannins and carries the creamy fruit through the long finish. Super-succulent and enticing. To produce this in 2018 is a real achievement. Hats off to the winemaking. So tempting even now, but will only improve. Try from 2024.’ 97 points, James Suckling
