We are thrilled to offer you the 2021 vintage from the celebrated Le Clos du Caillou in Chȃteauneuf-du-Pape.
A long-time favourite of Bancroft Wines, Le Clos du Caillou is one of the region’s most impressive properties. Remarkably the estate was excluded from the Chȃteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the 1930s, as the owners refused to allow their land to be surveyed, leaving a blank spot right in the middle of the map. As a result, Clos du Caillou is home to some spectacular Côtes-du-Rhône wines, as well as their outstanding Chȃteauneuf-du-Papes. Now in the hands of the Vacheron family, Le Clos du Caillou continues to produce exceptionally well-balanced wines under the guidance of talented winemaker Bruno Gaspard.
Le Clos du Caillou has produced a superb range of wines in 2021. Cooler temperatures resulted in very classic reds with great balance and freshness. From the enticing Les Safres and the dazzling Les Quartz, to the magnificent La Réserve, the wines show excellent persistence and depth with crunchy red fruits, silky tannins and delicious freshness. Moderate alcohol levels are a welcome change to some of the headier wines of the last few vintages. A joy to taste on release, they will be approachable in their youth but have plenty of ageing potential.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz is being shipped in October and is offered en primeur. Les Safres and La Réserve are available for immediate delivery. Please order as soon as possible to secure your allocation.

‘Matured for 18 months in foudre, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre. Pale ruby-colored, it reveals enticing red fruit aromas mingled with tomato leaf and cloves. Velvety tannins envelope this full-bodied red, balanced by fresh acidity and culminating in a savory finish. Drinking window 2024 to 2036.’ 93 points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous.

‘Checking in at 14.5% alcohol, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. It displays a fragrant perfume of redcurrant, cranberry, raspberry, dried herbs, white pepper and a dazzling floral element of rose petals. On the palate, it is full-bodied, concentrated and tightly structured with a muscular profile framed by ripe tannins. Perfectly balanced by lively acids, there’s excellent persistence on the long finish. Drinking window 2026 to 2040’ 94 points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous.

‘The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Réserve turned out magnificently and is one of the highlights of the vintage. The 2021 La Réserve was vinified from organically grown grapes – almost equally Grenache and Mourvèdre. Attractive aromas of predominantly red fruits, crushed flowers, thyme and exotic spices waft from the glass. It seamlessly lingers across the palate, dazzling with polished tannins and excellent freshness. The persistent finish is remarkable, with new flavors emerging long after the wine has left.
