Vasse Felix 2022

‘What a bargain for this pedigree - so classy it's ridiculous’

Erin Larkin

The Wine Advocate

We are delighted to offer you a parcel of recent releases from Australia’s celebrated Vasse Felix winery, one of the founding vineyards in the Margaret River.

A pioneering force in cool climate wine making, Vasse Felix was founded by Dr Tom Cullity in 1967. The site he chose was perfect, just 4 kilometres from the ocean. Cullity’s aim was to ‘make the best possible wine’, a legacy which is carried on to this day through every one of their wines which are celebrated for their fabulous concentration and elegance.

An excellent early vintage in the Margaret River, the 2020 Estate Chardonnay is made from a selection of premier plots. Winemaker Virginia Willcock has produced a powerful yet elegant wine combining textural richness with great complexity and a crisp mineral finish. As one citric has put it, this is ‘an Audrey Hepburn of a wine, utterly elegant and poised yet a little wild and arresting’ (The Age, Katie Spain). Writing in James Halliday’s Wine Companion, Erin Larkin describes it as ‘seamless, concentrated, floral, intense, so smart’. In summary ‘What a wine. And what a bargain for this pedigree – so classy it’s ridiculous.’

The gloriously expressive Vasse Felix 2020 Heytesbury Chardonnay comes from their very best Grand Cru plots.  Just as with the premier chardonnay, this is all barrel fermented with wild yeasts. Rich and concentrated with very subtle oak influences, a mineral tension strikes through to a prolonged finish; ‘brilliant as usual’ says Erin Larkin in the Wine Advocate.

A cooler vintage, the 2019 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Wilyabrup. Each plot is vinified individually and fermented using indigenous yeasts. The 2019 has great varietal purity with an attractive savoury character and super fine tannins. A seasoning of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc adds depth and complexity.  Cellar with confidence for at least 15 years.

Among Cullity’s first plantings were Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The Tom Cullity cuvée descends from these original vines and represents the purest expression of the estate’s terroir and heritage – the pinnacle of Vasse Felix. Perhaps the finest wine they have ever produced, the sensational 2018 Tom Cullity shows magnificent depth and sophistication. ‘Astounding. A wine for the ages’ says Larkin. Unsurprisingly it receives 99 points.

2020 Estate Chardonnay, Vasse Felix
£102 per 6 bottle in bond

‘The ‘20 vintage was made for the Vasse Felix chardonnay style. This is seamless, concentrated, floral, intense, so smart that it elicited a little chuckle upon tasting. Notes of peach and apple skin (of course) backed by jacaranda flowers, curry leaf, brine, crispy nori and pan fried nuts. What a wine. And what a bargain for this pedigree – so classy it’s ridiculous.’ 96 points, Erin Larkin – Halliday Wine Companion

2020 Heytesbury Chardonnay, Vasse Felix
£234 per 6 bottle in bond
*Extremely Limited*

‘In warmer vintages (like 2020) the Heytesbury chardonnay has extension and flex on release, they billow with flavour and pleasure, and the oak seems to be enveloped by it early on. So goes the story here: like the 2018 (on release) this is a scintillating show of powerful fruit, mineral/juicy acidity and layers of crushed rocks, petrichore. nori, summer fig and salted yellow peaches. A superstar wine – it’s closed now though: patience, or a decant is recommended. Drink by 2037′ 97 Points, Erin Larkin – James Halliday’s Wine Companion

2019 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Vasse Felix
£120 per 6 bottle in bond

‘Vasse Felix is a savory house—it’s important to understand in order to fully understand the wines, I believe. They are driven by savory, spicy tannin (reds) and chalky, structuring extract (whites). In this cool 2019 vintage, the 2019Cabernet Sauvignon is aromatically detailed, with cassis, mulberry, brine, nori, sun-dried kelp, iodine and five spice. On the palate, while the wine is structured and firm, no tannin can stop the mellifluous flow of fruit through the mouth. An impressive pool of flavor through the finish tells us about the potential this wine has for graceful aging in the cellar. Drink it at any time, but cellar it with confidence for 15 years plus.’ 93+ points, Wine Advocate – Erin Larkin

2018 Tom Cullity, Vasse Felix
£438 per 6 bottle in bond
*Extremely Limited*

‘This wine is the benchmark of the latent power, grace and inherent balance of the 2018 vintage in Margaret River. Texturally similar to the classically sophisticated 2014 vintage, but with far greater density and weight. Here, the savoury tannins are countersunk into the fruit already: shapely, firm, chewy, malleable – everywhere and nowhere at once. Waves of blood plum, cassis, blackberry, pomegranate, juniper, raspberries, saltbush, bay leaf and salted red licorice crash against the rocks, as kelp, nori, iodine, red gravel and brine ride the smaller sets out the back. Sensational. Astounding. A wine for the ages.’ 99 points, Halliday Wine Companion – Erin Larkin
