Following the great success of the 2019 vintage last year, we are pleased to announce the release of 2020 Siepi.
Siepi is one of the oldest recorded vineyards in Italy and has belonged to the Mazzei family of Castello di Fonterutoli since 1435, winemakers since the 11th century. A very special location, surrounded by an oak forest with deep soils, Merlot was planted here in the 1980s to produce the wine we know today. An equal blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, Siepi is the perfect marriage of elegance and power.
A terrific vintage, 2020 began with a cool spring followed by a long hot summer. Cooler nights and rainfall at key moments allowed the grapes to achieve excellent ripeness with thick skins and intense flavours. An ‘incredibly inviting wine’ for Galloni, 2020 has ‘enormous elegance and depth’ says Monica Larner.
With a 98-point score from James Suckling and 96 points from Galloni, this is another brilliant release which is bound to sell out quickly. Stock expected November 2022.

There is a sense of precision in the 2020 that is incredibly inviting. Even so, the 2020 is very young and not fully expressing its potential. ‘Equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese, the Mazzei 2020 Siepi is a terrific vintage in a long line of wines that I had the pleasure of tasting through last year in a complete retrospective. The first vintage produced was 1992. The soils in the Siepi vineyard are especially deep, and the site is surrounded by forests to keep it cool. These conditions give rise to abundant aromas of sweet black cherry, underbrush and blue wild flower. This is a medium to full-bodied Tuscan red that shows enormous elegance and depth.
