We wanted to highlight a selection of new, exciting 2020 releases from the Bordeaux Place from earlier this week: Hommage à Jacques Perrin, L’Aventure and Cloudburst.
Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2020 from Château de Beaucastel is a seamless blend of 75% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 10% Grenache and 5% Counois. From a remarkable terroir with old vines planted in 1909, from a remarkable terroir, 2020 was a cooler vintage than 2019 producing beautifully aromatic and ripe fruit. Made following biodynamic principles, this was one of the stand-out wines of the Beyond Bordeaux tastings, ‘Extravagant in the best sense of that word!’ says James Suckling.
L’Aventure was founded by Stephan and Beatrice Asseo in 1998. After searching for over a year among the world’s top wine regions, Stephan found Paso Robles with its rolling hills and deep calcareous soils. Made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot the ‘sure bet’ Optimus 2020 is elegant and attractive with wonderful, succulent fruit. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, 2020 Côte à Côte shows terrific purity and balance, ‘another brilliant wine in the making’ says Jeb Dunnuck. The flagship 2020 Estate Cuvée, a similar blend to the Optimus, impresses with its incredible intensity and balance, ‘another beautiful, classic’ according to Dunnuck.
Cloudburst is Australia’s leading cult wine. Created by Will Berline in southwestern Australia, on a site which had never been cultivated, the vineyard is worked by hand following biodynamic principles, mainly by Will himself. The vines are planted on their own rootstocks as there is no phylloxera. The impressive 2020 Chardonnay ‘slowly emerges from the glass with fantastically floral scents’ says Lisa Perrotti-Brown, while ‘the palate delivers incredible intensity with great purity’. Sweet fruited and silky textured, the wonderfully perfumed and expressive 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is another brilliant vintage from a highly acclaimed producer.

2020 Châteauneuf du Pape, Hommage à Jacques Perrin

‘A blend of 75% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Grenache, and 5% Counoise, the 2020 Hommage a Jacques Perrin is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a lot of swirling to unlock notions of tar, chargrill, Sichuan pepper, and black truffles, giving way to a fragrant core of black cherries, boysenberries, and tapenade with a touch of rose oil. The full-bodied palate is firm with taut, rounded tannins texturing the densely laden black fruits and savory layers, delivering great freshness and loads of earthy layers on the finish of this beautiful wine’ 98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Advocate
‘Enveloping nose of super-ripe orange, pomegranate and cigar leaf that’s still very youthful and needs time to reveal its myriad nuances. Also notes of licorice, dried herbs and rose petals. Enormous concentration, silkiness and finesse on the expansive palate. Extravagant in the best sense of that word! The finish gets finer, the closer it gets to infinity. 2020 Cloudburst Chardonnay, Margaret River

‘The 2020 Chardonnay slowly emerges from the glass with fantastically floral scents of orange blossoms and jasmine over a core of Bosc pears, white peaches, and grapefruit juice, plus suggestions of beeswax, marzipan, and chalk dust. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers incredible intensity with great purity and seamless freshness, framed by a satiny texture, revealing layer upon layers of citrus, stone fruit, and spiced pears notes, finishing with epic length and restraint. 3333 bottles of this extraordinarily singular wine were made’ 97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Advocate

2020 Estate Cuvée, L’Aventure

‘Lastly, the 2020 Estate Cuvee is based on 45% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, all of which is resting in around 85% new French oak. It has a deep purple hue as well as rock star notes of blackberries, ground pepper, chocolate, and chalky minerality. I love its texture, purity, and balance, and this is certainly another beautiful, classic wine from this talented team’ 96-98 points, Jeb Dunnuck
