South African highlights by Jancis Robinson as seen in the Financial Times

‘I am such as fan of South African wines, I’d like everyone to appreciate it’

Jancis Robinson

Financial Times Magazine

Writing about South African wines in the Financial Times Magazine last weekend, Jancis Robinson highly recommended the following wines from our portfolio:

Crisp and mineral with green citrus fruit notes, the Sauvignon Blanc from Baleia Wines is new to our range. Situated on lime-rich soils, a stone’s throw from Saint Sebastian Bay in the Western Cape – the whale nursery of South Africa – the Joubert family has been producing wines here since 2009. If you’re looking for a clean and refreshing Sauvignon, that smells and taste like the ocean, Baleia’s 2021 Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect white.

Established in 1692, Hartenberg from Stellenbosch is one of South Africa`s oldest wineries. Cellar master Carl Schultz has been making brilliant wines here for over 20 years. Handpicked in the early morning for freshness, Hartenberg`s 2018 Chardonnay has a wonderful lemon and lime flavour with an elegant savoury complexity, underscored by a racy and vibrant freshness. Subtle oak allows for a lingering and mouthwatering finish.

Ataraxia is located in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, ‘heaven and earth’ in Afrikaans. A short drive from the coastal town of Hermanus, the winery was founded by husband and wife team Kevin and Hanli Grant. As well as stunning views, the estate has some of the most spectacular terroirs in South Africa producing wines of incredible finesse, balance and depth. The wonderful 2021 Sauvignon Blanc from Ataraxia celebrates ‘elegance, vivacity and finesse’ says Kevin. Lively mineral notes combine with zingy citrus and passion fruit flavours.

Deliciously refreshing in the sunshine, all three wines are available in stock for immediate delivery at a special case discount of 15%. Free delivery on 12 or more bottles. Mixed cases are available too!

2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Baleia Wines
£71.10 per 6 bottle case on offer inc taxes – £11.85 per bottle
‘Interesting newish (2014) outfit with winemaker Gunter Schultz. Brad Gold (ex Iona) presented these wines with nice labels, from a property even further east than Sijnn. Very low introductory prices and their own fruit. The only winery currently producing within the Lower Duivenhoks River district of the Cape South Coast. Good palate presence and not too pungent. A good whole with real integrity and length. GV.’  16.5 points, Jancis Robinson

2018 Chardonnay, Hartenberg Wine Estate
£78.90 per 6 bottle case on offer inc taxes – £13.15 per bottle
‘Quite mature and serious with excellent weight and savour. A really complete riposte to white burgundy with good length. GV.’  16.5 points, Jancis Robinson

2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Ataraxia
£94.20 per 6 bottle case on offer inc taxes – £15.70 per bottle
‘From innovative winemaker Kevin Grant, who is busy experimenting with techniques not yet de rigueur in South Africa such as skin contact etc. Fresh, zingy nose with a hint of New Zealand about it. Excellent acidity and a dry finish with some mineral hints. Definitely an aperitif style! Racy and elegant. Long.’ 16.5 points, Jancis Robinson
