2016 Barolo Paiagallo & Lazzarito, Casa E. di Mirafiore

‘There is plenty to like, that much is clear’

Antonio Galloni

Vinous

On this sunny Thursday morning we are delighted to offer you two lovely 2016 Barolo from Casa E. di Mirafiore in Serralunga d’Alba, an exciting recent addition to our portfolio. Established in 1878 by Emanuele Alberto Guerrieri, Count of Mirafiore, the estate’s reputation has been restored to its former glory under new ownership.

Mirafiore owns parcels in two of the best crus in the region which we are delighted to offer you here: Paiagallo in Barolo and Lazzarito in Serralunga d’Alba. On a hill overlooking the village of Barolo, Paiagallo faces south-east and catches the early morning sun yielding intensely aromatic wines. Aged in large casks for two years, followed by one year in bottle, this wine can be enjoyed young but has the potential for ageing. Lazzarito is a long-revered and important site. An amphitheatre shaped vineyard on the western side of Serralunga, this is the ‘essence of Barolo from Serralunga’ says the estate. Traditionally made, like the Paiagallo, it has the potential to cellar for 20 years.

2016 is a vintage for collectors says Chief Winemaker Giorgio Lavagna. Nebbiolo achieved perfect phenolic maturity along with balanced and fresh acidity. ‘An ideal growing season with all the prerequisites for a great vintage’ says Galloni, the result is a vintage full of ‘truly spectacular, breathtaking wines that captures all the pedigree that Nebbiolo and Barolo are capable of’.

One of the best vintages in recent memory, we have a small parcel of just ten cases of each of these rare wines which will be snapped up quickly – we look forward to hearing from you.

2016 Barolo Paiagallo, Casa E. di Mirafiore
£275 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘The 2016 Barolo Paiagallo is classy and polished to the core. Bright red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, orange zest and cinnamon are finely knit in a Barolo that melds together supple fruit with bright acids and terrific energy. The 2016 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the poise to develop beautifully in bottle for years to come’  93 points, Antonio Galloni

2016 Barolo Lazzarito, Casa E. di Mirafiore
£365 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘The 2016 Barolo Lazzarito is redolent of spice, licorice, earthiness and savory notes, all of which convey quite a bit of character. Although the 2016 doesn’t quite have the power that is typical of this Serralunga cru, it makes up for that with notable complexity and nuance. There is plenty to like, that much is clear’ 92 points, Antonio Galloni

‘Mirafiore is a micro-winery within the vast Fontanafredda estate. Grapes are fermented with natural yeasts and given a long maceration period. Lazzarito is an outstanding Serralunga vineyard with rich marl soils, and its wines are deeply structured. The nose is rich and forceful, with spicy raspberry aromas, while the palate is equally forceful, displaying power, weight, and pungency. There’s admirable energy here as well as great length, so this will go the distance’
94 points, Stephen Brook, Decanter Magazine
