Altesino Brunello Di Montalcino 2017

‘The aromatics alone are worth the price of entry on the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli'

Eric Guido

Vinous

The magnificent 15th century Palazzo Altesi, home to the Altesino winery (pictured above), stands amongst the north-eastern hills of Montalcino near Siena. The ancient coat of arms, carved in white Carrara marble, is still visible above the antique oak portal. Elegance, finesse and complexity are the hallmarks of these terrific wines.

Considered one of the finest estates in Montalcino, Altesino was designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2004. One of the region’s innovators, they were the first property to use barriques and the first to introduce the concept of cru wines with their rare, single vineyard Montosoli Brunello.

The vineyards are located in different sectors of Montalcino enabling them to create exceptionally balanced estate bottlings each vintage. A wine with immediate appeal, the seductive and finely structured 2017 Brunello di Montalcino comes from all six of their vineyard sites. Absolutely delicious now, there is a good ten years of ageing ahead of it.

The wonderful 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is bright and energetic with a scented bouquet of violets and wild herbs and superb length, simply ‘spellbinding’ says Eric Guido. ‘One of the more successful Riservas of the vintage’.

The 2016 Riserva comes from southern vineyards near Sant’Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate with some northerly plots, including Montosoli. A very intense yet elegant wine, offering fragrances of lavender and blackcurrants, the 2016 is graceful and silky textured and keeps building in intensity, an ‘understated beauty’ according to Eric Guido.

We only have a small parcel of these wonderful wines which are offered en primeur on a first come first served basis. Shipment early summer 2022.

2017 Brunello di Montalcino, Altesino
£230 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino holds your attention with its sweetly seductive mix of wild strawberries, stems and all, dusty dried flowers and hints of gingery spice. This is pleasantly ripe in style yet balanced throughout, with cherries and cloves offset by a hint of candied citrus and bright acids that create a jovial impression. Its tannins are round, complemented by notes of licorice and hard red candies, as this finishes lightly structured and long. Altesino firmly believes in blending vineyards throughout Montalcino to create the most balanced Brunello from each vintage. In 2017 that approach sure paid off. ‘ 92 points, Eric Guido

‘ Concentrated bead of blackberries and minerals pervades the nose and palate….’ 95 points, James Suckling

2017 Brunello di Montalcino ‘Montosoli’ Altesino
£425 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘The aromatics alone are worth the price of entry on the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli. A dazzling display is revealed as this opens like a basket of freshly picked flowers with ripe strawberries, cloves and a hint of plum sauce that adds gravitas. Its elegance is nicely matched by a balanced inner sweetness, as mineral-tinged red berries are contrasted by hints of sour citrus and savory spice. Fine tannins mount, yet are almost imperceptible until the finish, where notes of blood orange mingle with licorice and inner rose. In a word, spellbinding. While some cellaring will be needed, I expect the 2017 Montosoli to enjoy a broad, open and highly pleasurable drinking window.’ 94+ points, Eric Guido

‘Super clean black fruit and minerals on the nose and palate. Floral…’ 97 points, James Suckling

2016 Brunello di Montalcino ‘Riserva’ Altesino
£450 per 6 bottle case in bond
*Very Limited*

‘The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is so incredibly dark and inward that it prompted me to open a second bottle just to confirm that impression. After an hour, the bouquet started to come to life, with hints of menthol and mint giving way to nuances of black currant and animal tones. It’s much more expressive on the palate, where silky textures are cooled by vibrant acids, and tart wild berry fruits mix with salty minerals and inner violet florals. The 2016 is long and structured, showing balsam herbs, black licorice and a flourish of inner sweetness. This is such an interesting showing as, other than the bouquet, all of the ingredients are here and well proportioned for a long, steady evolution. I’m very intrigued to see where this understated beauty is going over time.’ 94+ points, Eric Guido

‘There’s beautiful purity in this Brunello with cherry and floral aromas’ 96 points, James Suckling
