2020 Burgundy En Primeur – Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin
We will be offering a few early 2020 Burgundy releases over the next few weeks and this morning we are excited to bring you Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini’s delightful Bourgogne Rouge and Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes. Tasted from barrel, the wines at this domaine have never been better . Fantastically vibrant with wonderful purity, they highlight the quality of this outstanding vintage.
A rising star, Florence Heresztyn-Mazzini made quite an impact when she took over her family’s vineyards in 2012. The estate covers 5.5 hectares across Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, and is unique in having very old vines. Florence uses a combination of natural and biodynamic methods in the vineyards. As she explains, her role is to protect ‘the life of the terroir’ and ‘to feel, to understand, to better decide’. Low intervention winemaking and careful use of whole bunches produces deliciously pure and velvety wines. Bottling is without fining or filtration. An exceptional vintage, 2020 yields were only 50% of a normal year due to tiny, concentrated berries.
Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini’s wines are super attractive whilst offering great ageing potential. They have also been receiving high scores, including rave reviews from Neal Martin for the 2019s. The 2020s are even better and we are expecting serious interest. Both wines are a wonderful introduction to the style of the domaine and, as always, remain fantastic value.

2020 Bourgogne Rouge

Produced from a single plot in Gevrey-Chambertin, called Champ Franc, this is a wonderfully pure and appealing Bourgogne rouge with cool blueberry and cassis aromas. Very elegant on the palate, dark strawberry and juicy plum fruits and a hint of spice are supported by fine tannins and a refreshing mineral quality – couldn’t be more delicious. Drink from 2022.
2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes
£260 per 6 bottle case in bond
Les Songes comes from En Songe and Les Gueulepines to the north of the village, a parcel with 90 to 100-years-old vines. Elegant and aromatic, the nose is full of raspberry and wild berry fruits. Showing more lift than 2019, perfumed violet and forest fruits are supported by fine tannins and an elegant mineral note with a delicate spicy character on the finish – delicious now but deserves time in bottle. Drink from 2025.
