Six Classics For Christmas – Bordeaux And Burgundy
To make your preparations for Christmas as easy as possible, we have chosen a selection of six classic fine wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy which we know you’ll enjoy. Perfect for drinking now, these wines would proudly grace any table at Christmas.
Starting with the whites, Domaine Sébastien Magnien in Meursault produces very elegant, refreshing whites which offer super value for money. His Saint-Romain Sous le Château comes from the best terroir in the appellation. Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange is one of the finest properties in Chassagne-Montrachet. Marc-Antonin Blain makes very complex wines that show great terroir expression and 2018 is a top-quality vintage for this domaine.
Moving to the reds, Domaine Valmengaux comes from gentle slopes near Fronsac on Bordeaux`s Right Bank. David and Valérie Vallet follow organic methods and make gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon based wines aged in large foudres. On the other side of the mighty Gironde river, neighbouring Calon-Ségur, Chȃteau Capbern produces classic Saint-Estèphe wines with ample dark fruit. The 2015 is ‘a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next decade’ says Antonio Galloni. Les Charmes de Kirwan is the second wine of Chateau Kirwan Grand Cru. Approachable earlier than the Grand Vin, this is a very classy claret. Lastly, Domaine Joseph Roty from Burgundy has been in the same family since 1710. Pierre-Jean produces finely crafted Pinot Noirs from some of the oldest vines in the region and this 2017 Marsannay couldn’t be more delicious.

Saint-Romain Sous Le Château, Domaine Sébastien Magnien 2018

Saint Romain’s cooler vineyards, to the west of Auxey-Duresses, produce very racy whites with attractive floral notes. The 2018 combines ripe stone fruits notes with lovely freshness.
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte, Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange 2018

Subtle aromas of summer flowers and white peaches lead to an energetic palate with bright green apple flavours and a salty mineral finish. Shows lovely direction – very special.
Domaine de Valmengaux, Bordeaux 2016

The Valmengaux 2016 has a bouquet of blackberries and dark plums. The palate is generous and fresh with a touch of blueberry and delicate spice. Very smooth and enjoyable. A classic vintage.
Chateau Capbern Saint-Estèphe 2015

A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, this has a spicy nose of cherries, plums, violets and lavender. The medium-bodied palate shows fresh blackberry and forest fruit notes. A great vintage. Decant for an hour before drinking.
Les Charmes de Kirwan, Margaux 2017

An elegantly balanced Margaux with notes of cassis and black berries on the nose, the 2017 shows supple sweet fruits on the palate balanced by fine tannins. Beautifully presented in an attractive wooden case so also ideal as a Christmas gift.
Marsannay Rouge, Domaine Joseph Roty 2017

Roty is rightly proud of his old vines Marsannay. From several parcels located on the middle part of the slope. This wine is dark and fleshy with wild strawberry fruit flavours, and a hint of elegant spice on the finish. Very attractive.
