A family-owned estate run by Vincent Avril, Clos des Papes is one of the most highly regarded properties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. We are delighted to bring you their 2020 vintage release.
Less powerful and more elegant than the previous vintage, but with the possibility to age well, Vincent Avril considers 2020 a great year: ‘I can tell you 2020 is, I think, a great year that will stand the test of time. A very balanced, fine vintage with great freshness, silky tannins and good length in the mouth. Everything was climatically united, both for the red and the white. 2020 currently reminds me of 2005 and 2007.’
Showing remarkable purity of fruit with silky tannins, the 2020 Clos des Papes Rouge is a medium to full-bodied ‘finesse-driven’ wine according to Jeb Dunnuck. The 2020 Clos des Papes Blanc has a very attractive floral bouquet and offers ‘terrific overall balance, and a great finish’. Crisp and mineral, the 2020 is comparable to the 2019 but with more energy and finesse.
The 2020 vintage was an uneventful growing season with no frost and hail. However, it was dry and very little rain fell between May and the end of August. The harvest took place in excellent conditions starting on September 1st for the whites, and September 7th for the reds. The berries were extremely healthy so very little sorting was required.
We have a small allocation of these wines, very little of the white, so please contact as soon as possible. Any purchase of the white will need to be linked to the red. Wines will be shipped in the summer of 2022. We look forward to hearing from you.
