We are delighted to offer you the new 2018 vintage of Camarcanda, the flagship wine from Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
After no less than eighteen trips to complete the negotiations, the purchase of the historic Bolgheri estate on the Tuscany coast took place in 1996 and was named ‘Ca’Marcanda’, the house of endless negotiations. It was another six years before Italian architect Giovanni Bo would complete Angelo’s stylish vision of a state-of-the-art winery which blends in with the surrounding landscape.
Bolgheri reds combine ripeness and freshness with an elegant mineral quality evoking the Mediterranean coast. The grape varieties cultivated resemble Bordeaux but with bottle age, aromas of wild herbs and lavender, which typify this part of the Tuscan coast, come to the fore. Cooler than 2017, the wines from the 2018 vintage show great finesse.
According to Decanter Magazine, thanks to ‘a fresh spring and moderate summer, the conditions were perfect’, producing very graceful wines. A well-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend, this classic Bolgheri Rosso shows smooth redcurrant and black cherry fruits with ‘fine tannins and very attractive length and energy’ according to James Suckling.
As always, there tends to be a huge amount of interest around any release from the iconic Gaja portfolio. This delightful Camarcanda is no exception and certainly not to be missed. Stock is due to arrive from Italy in January.

The 2018 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and you definitely feel those full-throttle varietal aromas with big intensity and clarity. Spicy greenness comes forward as grilled rosemary and lavender essence, but the wine boasts nice depth and dimension, and enough textual richness to smooth it all out….
