Founded in 1825, Joseph Perrier has been owned and run by the same family since 1888. Cuvée Joséphine is their prestige cuvée and is undoubtedly an extremely fine champagne.
The wine was named in honour of Joséphine, the favoured daughter of Joseph Perrier. It was for her wedding in 1840 that her father created this dedicated cuvée for guests to enjoy. The champagne was presented in hand painted, highly decorated magnums for the occasion. Jean-Claude Fourmon, who led the estate between 1979 and 2019, recreated this iconic cuvée with the classic 1982 vintage.
Cuvée Joséphine is a blend of a little over 50% Chardonnay with the balance Pinot Noir. Both of these varieties come from family vineyards in Cumières with wines from a very limited number of other vineyards in 2012 from Ambonnay and Bergères-les-Vertus. This cuvée is only released in the best vintages (1985, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2012) and is always made in small quantities, even by the standards of Champagne Joseph Perrier, one of the smallest Grande Marque Houses.
The aim of Benjamin Fourman, who took over from his father in 2019, together with cellar master Nathalie Laplaige, is to create an exceptional champagne combining harmony with intensity. The rare 2012 vintage, a great year in Champagne, is a brilliant example. Aged for an extended period in deep chalk cellars, this very fine and complex champagne has an extremely delicate mousse followed by a very invigorating and elegant palate. The perfect prestige Champagne for Christmas, it would go brilliantly with salmon and turkey and is rich enough to partner most puddings.
