Finding Value In Bordeaux

Bordeaux is one of France’s most influential wine regions and yet, all too often, has been overlooked by customers when purchasing for immediate drinking.

All that is changing which owes a lot to hot competition from other regions. The quality, accessibility, and value of Bordeaux for everyday drinking has improved in leaps and bounds in recent years. Our broadening Bordeaux portfolio mirrors a burgeoning interest in these wines.

Among the gems in our portfolio is Château Lucas which hails from the up-and-coming Lussac-Saint-Émilion satellite appellation and is owned by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone fame.

Our list also includes organic offerings from a comparatively young-owned estate, Valmengaux, as well as biodynamic wines from Vignobles Despagne-Rapin of Montagne-Saint-Émilion. We also represent Château Mazetier, managed by a husband-and-wife duo dedicated to ‘lutte raisonnée’ agricultural practices.

Further mention goes to the charming and classic Bordeaux offerings from Château le Pey and Château La Gorce, as well as an outstanding white and red duo from Château Haut-Grelot in the Côtes de Blaye.

Château Lucas 2015

£18.49 per bottle

Château Lucas 2015 from Lussac-Saint-Émilion is composed of equal parts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, 20% of which is aged for 12-18 months in oak barrels. Château La Gorce 2016

Château La Gorce Médoc is a classic Médoc blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon. Only the best fruit, selected from old vines, makes it into the final wine, which is then aged for 12-18 months in oak.

This is a cracking wine with a generously fruity nose, good firm structure, supple tannins and a lovely mouthfeel. Pairs beautifully with gratin dauphinoise and roast lamb.

Domaine de Valmengaux En Jarre 2018

£27.99

The Valmengaux En Jarre is Merlot dominant, supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is aged for 12 months in large Tuscan clay amphora jars and bottled unfiltered. In the glass, the En Jarre is bright in hue with a purple tint. The nose is expressive with blackcurrant and raspberry notes. The palate is fresh and supple with mouth-filling plummy, round tannins.

Domaine de Valmengaux 2016

£23.99

The Valmengaux is Merlot dominant, with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Deep purple in hue, black fruits jump from the glass; blackberry and dark plums.
