2018 Burgundy
A Delightful Selection of 2018 White Burgundies: Saint-Véran, Pouilly Fuissé, Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc & Saint-Romain
Today’s offer is a selection from two up-and-coming Burgundy producers who are new to our portfolio, Famille Pacquet in Mâcon and Domaine Sebastien Magnien in Meursault. Small family properties who make very energetic, fresh and precise wines, they have a lot in common.
A young domaine by name only, as it descends from Domaine Parigot de Meloisey in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, Sébastien Magnien transferred to revamped Meursault cellars in 2003. Sébastien is a very talented young vigneron who makes wines in the most classical Burgundian traditions. With a hands-off approach in the cellar, and a minimalist use of oak, that lets terroir speak for itself, the wines are pure fruited and focused.
Located in the village of Davayé, Famille Paquet is run by three brothers, Jean-Baptiste, Mathieu and Camille. They follow organic and biodynamic methods and manage each of their 50 plots individually. Camille, the winemaker of the family, believes in making wines as naturally as possible using indigineous yeasts and barrels that are two or three years old so that the oak does not interfere with the fruit. The wines are super fresh and dynamic, some of the very best from the Mâcon region.
The 2018 vintage was a surprise to many growers producing lovely, fruity whites with lots of energy and freshness, despite a warm summer. Picking at the right moment was absolutely crucial and those that succeeded made excellent wines. Antonio Galloni discovered ‘surprisingly zingy’ whites which are starting to show very well indeed, especially from the south of Burgundy and the Hautes Côtes.
In the next few weeks, we’ll be turning our attention to the new 2020 vintage but with significant crop shortages, of whites in particular, prices are expected to increase very significantly. 2018 Saint-Véran En Crèches, Famille Paquet

Shaped like an amphitheatre, the En crèches vineyard is known for its steep slopes and old vines. Immediately appealing with crunchy, crisp fruit, this expressive yet very lively Saint-Véran has fragrances of green apples, lemons and honeysuckle. The palate shows supple stone fruit notes with an elegant mineral quality from the terroir and a hint of spice. All very harmonious and attractive, and perfect for drinking over the next few years.
2018 Pouilly Fuissé, Famille Paquet

Pouilly-Fuissé is the star commune in Burgundy’s Mâconnais region producing elegantly fruity and attractive whites with good ageing potential. Showing a well-defined nose with pronounced stone fruit and citrus notes, a subtle minerality comes through after swirling the glass. Well-balanced on the palate with a very persistent finish, this is a very classy white Burgundy which will offer lots of drinking pleasure. ‘Notes of ripe pear seem to smile from the glass. They also present themselves in a clear, bright light on the fresh, juicy and slightly textured palate. 2018 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc, Sébastien Magnien

From a small point plot on a south-east facing parcel in the middle of the hillside, Sébastien’s Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc is elegant and refreshing with a fine mineral character. On the palate, bright lemon and lime fruits and a pithy grapefruit note, lead to a long finish with hints of almonds and honeysuckle. Retasted just recently, this wine is starting to show very well indeed – delicious as an aperitif wine or with creamy sauces.
2018 Saint-Romain Sous le Château, Sébastien Magnien

Saint Romain’s cooler vineyards, just to the west of Auxey-Duresses, produce very racy whites which retain their freshness in warm vintages. From an exceptional terroir, this is an energetic and intense wine with vivacious notes of citrus peel and lime ending on a long mineral finish. Showing Sébastien’s signature restraint and elegance, this wine will be delicious for drinking over the next five years or so. Enjoy with dover sole, scallops or a mature white cheese.
