2016 Amarone Della Valpolicella, Marion

'Marion continues to be at the top of their game'

Eric Guido

Vinous

Today’s offer is a ‘sleeping giant of a wine’, the 2016 Amarone from Marion which receives a stunning 95 points from Eric Guido in Vinous.

Located in Marcellise on the hills east of Verona, Marion is owned and run by the Campadelli family who purchased the estate, including its splendid 15th century villa, in 1986. Stefano Campedelli and his wife, Nicoletta Fornasa, are the driving force behind the steady rise in the reputation of these wines. Recent changes include a reduction in the use of tonneaux in favour of larger and more neutral casks for ageing. The wines have never been as pure and elegant as they are today yet remain great value for money.

The 2015 and 2016 vintages were both fantastic but there is something special about 2016. Supremely elegant and appealing, the Amarone is ‘hauntingly dark and layered’ with ‘so much power here and depths unseen’ says Eric Guido. Although approachable now, it has huge cellaring potential – a wine to ‘bury in the cellar’ he adds.

We are pleased to offer the 2016 Amarone at just £290.00 per case in bond. There are only 90 bottles available at this special price so please contact us as soon as possible.

2016 Amarone della Valpolicella, Marion
£290 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella is a sleeping giant, wafting up with a hauntingly dark and layered display of crushed stone, black cherry, lavender, dusty earth, animal musk and hints of Indian curry. It’s deeply textural, velvety, yet light on its feet, with penetrating dark fruits offset by zesty spiced orange and minerals, as fine tannins slowly saturate. It finishes structured with cheek-puckering tension, resonating on notes of red currant with hints of baker’s chocolate. There’s so much power here and depths unseen, which will take time to fully emerge. If tasted blind, you’d be hard pressed to call this out as Amarone, and I mean that in the best possible way – Drink 2024-2036’ 95 points, Eric Guido – Vinous.com
