2016 Château La Nerthe

'The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, Château La Nerthe is one of the finest classical cuvées I can remember’

Jeb Dunnuck

The Wine Advocate

With records dating back to 1560, Château La Nerthe is one of the oldest and most celebrated properties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A rival to the likes of Chȃteau de Beaucastel, improvements in the vineyards and the cellar over the last few years have resulted in some seriously impressive wines.

We are delighted today to offer a small parcel of their excellent 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the last few cases which were left at the estate. Supple and broad textured with notes of redcurrants, black cherries, dried herbs and a hint of peppery spice, this is classic Châteauneuf, the perfect accompaniment to lamb or beef stew and a grand veneur sauce. A highly regarded vintage, this 2016 is absolutely delicious now but has enough ‘backbone and length on the finish to think it will drink well for more than a decade’, says Joe Czerwinski in the Wine Advocate, ‘one of the finest classical cuvées I can remember’ says Jeb Dunnuck.

Château La Nerthe also makes a small amount of organic Côtes du Rhône Villages from 40-year-old vines in Sérignan-du-Comtat called Les Cassagnes. A blend of Syrah (50%), Grenache (30%) and Mourvèdre (15%), the 2019 is an elegantly balanced, perfumed wine with notes of red fruits, garrigue and sweet spices. A fine vintage which produced wines with lots of depth, the 2019 is ‘uncommonly elegant for a villages wine, with a long, silky finish,’ says Joe Czerwinski. Punching well above its weight, Les Cassagnes delivers great value for such a complex and balanced wine.

2019 Les Cassagnes Rouge Côtes-du-Rhône Villages

£79 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘This wine continues to be domaine-bottled, although a cursory look at the label reveals just 2019 La Nerthe Cotes du Rhone Villages Les Cassagnes. It’s a separate estate under the same ownership as Château La Nerthe. Dark and intensely colored, it comes across as welcomely airy and lacy in texture, while still showing ample concentration. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre from limestone and sand soils, it delivers notes of ripe cherries and mulberries, plus hints of roses, garrigue, orange zest and dried spices. It’s uncommonly elegant for a villages wine, with a long, silky finish.’ 91 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge

£184 per 6 bottle case in bond

‘Deeply colored, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 37% Grenache, 29% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre, and the rest Cinsault and other permitted varieties. With classic notes of currants, ripe black cherries, new saddle leather, and peppery herbs, it’s rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, with a pure, focused style that’s going to age gracefully for 15-20 years. It’s one of the finest classical cuvées I can remember.’ 94 points, Jeb Dunnuck – Jebdunnuck.com
