This morning’s spot offer is a 100-point duo from L’Aventure estate in Paso Robles California, the ‘magical’ Cote à Cote and the flagship Estate Cuvée, described as ‘pure perfection’ by Jeb Dunnuck in the Wine Advocate.
Stephan Asseo, owner and winemaker at L’Aventure Winery is ‘without a doubt, one of the Central Coast superstars and one of the references in California” says Jeb Dunnuck. Stephan began making wine in Bordeaux, purchasing Chateau Fleur Cardinale Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. With a reputation as a maverick, he soon started to look beyond Bordeaux.
After a long search, Stephan found Paso Robles in California. The rolling topography of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range, the deep calcareous soils, and the maritime influence of the renowned Templeton Gap had the potential to craft some of the world’s greatest wines. He named his new project ‘L’Aventure’.
In a recent line-up of ‘Beyond Bordeaux’ releases in London, the L’Aventure wines impressed us with their class and elegance. Nuanced and gorgeous, the Cote à Cote 2019 is a blend of 34% Grenache, 34% Mourvèdre and 32% Syrah, while the concentrated yet, weightless Estate Cuvée (showing a little more structure perhaps) is a blend of 50% Syrah, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Both over deliver in our view.

‘Another magical wine from this estate is the 2019 Côte à Côte, a blend of 34% each of Grenache and Mourvèdre, with the balance Syrah. Brought up in 29% new French oak, it boasts a dense purple color as well as incredible aromatics of blue fruits, smoked game, violets, black pepper, and spring flowers. One of those incredibly complex, nuanced wines that still brings depth and richness on the palate, it’s perfectly balanced, has ultra-fine tannins, and a gorgeous finish. ‘Pure perfection from Paso Robles, the 2019 Estate Cuvee checks in as 50% Syrah, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Petit Verdot that was raised in 81% new French oak. Incredible cassis and black berry fruits as well as violets, chocolate, graphite, and who knows what else emerges from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a concentrated yet weightless mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish.
