2018 Opus One, Napa Valley

'The 2018 Opus One soars out of the glass'

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW

The Wine Advocate

Up next from La Place de Bordeaux, we are delighted to offer you the new 2018 vintage of Opus One.

Opus One was founded by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton. By combining the great winemaking traditions of both families, their aim was to create an exceptional Bordeaux style blend in the heart of the Napa Valley. The 2018 is another outstanding achievement, a wine which ‘soars out of the glass’ according to Monica Larner who scores it a brilliant 98 points.

The 2018 vintage enjoyed idyllic conditions. While the season got off to a later start than usual, veraison was only seven days later than average which gave the grapes the time to achieve perfect ripeness. Harvest began on September 19th and continued until the October 25th.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 84%, Petit Verdot 6%, Merlot 5%, Cabernet Franc 4% and Malbec 1%, with 17 months ageing in new French oak, the 2018 has a seductive bouquet of blackberries, cassis and black cherries followed by notes of violets, white pepper and rose petals. Beautifully harmonious on the palate, fine grained tannins and fresh acidity balance juicy black fruit accented with hints of orange zest and dark chocolate finishing with a ‘lingering mineral note’ says Monica Larner.

The perfect combination of finesse and power, the 2018 is definitely a wine to add to your collection! As ever quantities are extremely limited, so please contact us at the earliest opportunity.

Winemaker Michael Silacci shares the story of the 2018 Opus One

‘The 2018 offers profuse aromas of dark fruit, followed by notes of violets, white pepper, and rose petals. The seamlessly layered flavors build to a crescendo of black-fruit, accented with hints of orange zest, and dark chocolate. Beautifully balanced, the smooth tannins and fresh acidity create a soft mouthfeel and extend the flavors into a long persistent finish.’ Source: Instagram.

‘Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Opus One soars out of the glass with bright, bold boysenberries, warm cassis and ripe, juicy black plums notes, plus emerging nuances of lilacs, oolong tea, cinnamon stick, tilled soil and black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with tightly wound layers of crunchy black fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing with lifted fruitiness and on a lingering mineral note Drink 2024-2058’ 98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, robertparker.com

‘The 2018 Opus One is incredibly elegant and polished, right out of the bottle. Silky tannins and lifted, perfumed aromatics add to an impression of finesse that distinguishes the 2018 from some of the preceding vintages in a pretty big way. It will be interesting to see if the 2018 gains body with a bit of time in bottle. It is pretty rare for Opus One to be so approachable at this stage. 2024 – 2043’ 95 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com
