Back in February 2018, the Wine Advocate was invited to Chateau Montelena to taste through a selection of wines over five decades. One of the stars of the show was undoubtedly the 2015 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon which was awarded 95+ points. A few weeks later, Antonio Galloni scored the 2015 an impressive 96 points describing it as ‘drop-dead gorgeous’.
Chateau Montelena’s iconic gothic stone winery was built by Alfred Tubbs in the 1880s and purchased by Jim and Judy Barrett in the early 1970s. Rather surprisingly, there was no Cabernet Sauvignon on the estate so Jim began planting. Under his son, Bo Barrett, the estate has been producing increasingly exceptional reds. ‘Proprietor Bo Barrett and Winemaker Matt Crafton continue to up their game at Montelena’ says Antonio Galloni. The ‘2015 Cabernets and the Estate, in particular, were superb’ for Galloni.
Older vintages show just how brilliantly Montelena’s wines age. Retasted by the Bancroft team in London only recently, the 2015 showed wonderful balance and freshness giving real tension to the wine. The 2015 is just starting to show what it can do but has another twenty years of cellaring potential. ‘Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate reveals vibrant cassis, crushed black plums and black raspberries notes with hints of fallen leaves, damp soil, cedar chest and charcoal plus a waft of lavender. Medium-bodied with plenty of lively, crunchy black and red fruits, it has a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins and a long, youthful finish with the oak still standing out slightly. Give it another 2-3 years in bottle and drink it over the next 25-30+.’ 95+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Although the 2015 has quite a bit of density and raciness, it also retains considerable freshness. This is another drop-dead gorgeous wine from Chateau Montelena.
