ēkhô Wines joins the Bancroft Wines Portfolio

Old-vine, volcanic Greek wines from Naxos.

Lenka Sedlackova MW, Senior Brand Manager at Bancroft Wines, comments: “I am delighted to be adding ēkhô to our expanding Greek portfolio, we now proudly boast three top-tier producers who all represent the depth and diversity of Greek wines.

It is always special to discover and follow new projects, especially ones as exciting as ēkhô. We have shipped two of their wines so far, the White and the Rosé, both from Naxos island. Naxos may be more familiar as a summer holiday destination but the mountainous interior is home to some very old, ungrafted vines and indigenous Cycladian varieties.

The wine producing potential of Naxos has not gone unnoticed and the viticultural landscape of the island is slowly beginning to transform. It is beginning to make a name for itself by bringing these historic vineyards to the forefront, thanks to steady investment and the pioneering winemakers such as Lefteris Anagnostou, who is the brains behind ēkhô.”

Lefteris Anagnostou, Winemaker at ēkhô, comments: “I am thrilled to be working with Bancroft Wines and sharing this project with the UK market. The idea of the project is based on the intent of re-approaching wine regions of historical significance in Greece and restating their expression through the vinification of particular plots. These areas have powerful bonds with vine-growing and winemaking, lost over the centuries, and in most cases, produced wines that were renowned in ancient times. The historical bonds are the unifying element, whereas the old, own-rooted vines, of both known and unknown varieties, are the instruments of this transportation to our days using a contemporary approach.”

About ēkhô Wines

ēkhô is the brainchild of winemaker Lefteris Anagnostou, who has made his name in Santorini putting the very highly regarded Artemis Karamolegos winery on the map. He is a consultant winemaker for many wineries in Santorini, Crete, and on the mainland. This is Lefteris’s first own project, based on the island of Naxos, and 2021 is the first vintage.

Lefteris sources grapes for this project from nearby vineyards with contracted growers using select single plots. ēkhô is based on the intention of re-approaching wine territories of historical significance and restate their expression through the vinification of selected plots. These areas have strong bonds with vine growing and wine production, through the centuries and in most cases, produced wines that were renowned in ancient times. The historical connection is the link element, whereas the old, ungrafted vines, of both known and unknown varieties, are the core of this transportation to our days through a contemporary approach.

Heroic viticulture is the key element of the selected, mostly isolated plots that are difficult to approach and cultivate, producing rare and low-yielding fruit. One of the principal purposes is to secure and regenerate the old vineyards and create strong bonds with each land. Lefteris’ intention is to highlight the depth of Greek wines and its multiple characters, trying to showcase untold stories and rephrasing lost voices. Naxos is said to be the birthplace of the Greek god of wine, Dionysus. The island is a relatively newly rediscovered part of the Greek viticultural landscape but fast becoming popular due to its historically significant old vineyards.
