Chapel Hill

  • Australia
Under the guidance of winemakers Michael Fragos and Bryn Richards, Chapel Hill strives to craft wines with purity and balance. Chapel Hill Winery was built on the site of the Seaview Chapel and school house. The 1865 ironstone Chapel still stands proudly today and is an integral feature of the tasting room. The first plantings were made in 1972 and the first vintage was released in 1975. The growth of Chapel Hill Winery into a world-renowned wine producer was led by winemaker Pam Dunsford. Pam was a pioneering winemaker in South Australia. The first female graduate of the acclaimed winemaking course at Roseworthy in 1983, Pam's work led to many acclaims and awards for Chapel Hill Winery, and a lot of those great wines from the 1990's are still drinking beautifully today. Chapel Hill has had only a handful of custodians since Thomas Nelson, with the Sellick, Gerrard and Schmidheiny families adding to the rich tapestry of buildings, brand and place.

Perched on the edge of the spectacular Onkaparinga Gorge, shallow rocky soils are a feature with sweeping views back over McLaren Vale and Gulf St Vincent. The beautiful Chapel Hill vineyard overlooking sea views boasts elevation, ancient rocks, contoured plantings and moderating sea breezes. The undulating landscape results in a series of small blocks with unique combinations of geology, soil, aspect and climate. To complement the grapes grown in its vineyard, Chapel Hill also sources fruit from a range of ‘like-minded' grower vineyards. The range includes the MV Grenache, MV Shiraz and The Parson Cabernet Sauvignon. The Parson Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 was selected as one of acclaimed wine critic Matthew Jukes' 100 Best Australian Wines 2022/2023.
