Quinta do Pôpa Joins Bancroft

Bancroft is pleased to announce that Quinta do Pôpa from the Douro has joined the portfolio.

Quinta do Pôpa is deeply rooted in family history and Douro tradition. Francisco “Pôpa” Ferreira, the illegitimate son of a renowned wine producer, was a charismatic and well-respected figure within his community. Though he dreamed of creating his own winery, it was his son, José Ferreira, who brought that vision to life in 2003 by acquiring prime vineyard slopes in Adorigo, Tabuaço, and naming the estate in honour of his father.

The vineyards are a mix of old vines, some more than 80 years old, and younger parcels planted to classic Douro varieties, set amongst olive groves and orchards. Planted on schist terraces above the Douro River, these sites enjoy excellent sun exposure and a significant diurnal range, producing fruit with both depth and freshness.

“Partnering with Bancroft is an exciting opportunity to share not only our wines, but also our family story and the spirit of the Douro with the UK. We believe Bancroft shares our values of authenticity, passion, and innovation, and together we look forward to inspiring people to dream, create, and always celebrate.” – Stéphane & Vanessa Ferreira, Co-owners Quinta do Pôpa.

Damian Carrington, Managing Director at Bancroft Wines, says: “We are very excited to welcome Quinta do Pôpa to our portfolio, an estate that beautifully combines Douro tradition with a fresh, modern spirit. Drawing on old schist terraces and younger parcels that highlight the diversity of the Douro, they produce wines that show a wonderful balance of purity, generosity, and finesse. Under the leadership of Stéphane and Vanessa, Quinta do Pôpa has become one of the most engaging names in the Douro today, and we are delighted to introduce their wines to our customers in the UK.”

The range comprises Contos da Terra, blends of Douro varieties made in stainless steel to emphasise fruit purity and freshness. The Selection range comes from older vines and prime parcels, showing greater depth and concentration. The white is led by Verdelho with supporting indigenous varieties, while the red blends Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, underlining the precision and complexity of Quinta do Pôpa’s style.

The first vintage was released in 2007, and then in 2009 the wines were made in collaboration with the renowned Luís Pato, who helped define the house style and brought his unique approach to the viticulture and winemaking. Quinta do Pôpa wines show generosity and structure balanced by purity and finesse. Now led by the next generation, Stéphane and Vanessa Ferreira, Quinta do Pôpa continues to craft wines that reflect the character of the valley’s schistous slopes and diverse microclimates. Stéphane brings charisma, creativity, and a fearless approach to winemaking, while Vanessa channels her deep connection to the Douro into a vision rooted in nature and inspiration. The Estate is certified sustainable and in conversion to organics.
