Makarounas Winery joins the Bancroft Portfolio

Lenka Sedlackova MW, Senior Brand Manager of Bancroft Wines, comments, ‘We are very excited to expand our Hellenic wine portfolio with the addition of the fantastic Makarounas winery from Cyprus. Cypriot wine has made incredible strides forward in the past decade, as producers learn to realise the full potential of their unique indigenous grape varieties and high altitude vineyards. Makarounas is one of the new shining stars of this movement. The story is all there and aligns so perfectly with the Bancroft buying ethos: focus on organic viticulture, indigenous and ungrafted vines, high altitude vineyards, wines made with minimal intervention and with lower alcohol levels. There is a brightness to their wines, a crystalline and chalky undertone to the whites and real charm and vivacity to their reds, never compromising the uniqueness of their native varieties.’

Theodoros Makarounas, Winemaker at Makarounas Winery, says, ‘We are thrilled to announce a dynamic new collaboration with Bancroft Wines in the UK market. A renowned wine importer which delights wine enthusiasts and eco-conscious consumers alike. Our partnership is more than just a business venture; it’s a celebration of our shared values and mutual love for fine wine and for the environment.

Through Bancroft, we are able to showcase our curated selection of exquisite wines in the UK, that not only tantalize the palate but also honour the earth from which they spring, the unique terroir of Cyprus. Our shared dedication to eco-friendly viticulture ensures that each bottle carries the legacy of responsible winemaking. We will offer a portfolio of wines that tell the story of love for our indigenous varieties in Cyprus, capture the island’s essence, from the sun-kissed vineyards of our village in Letymbou to the time-honored winemaking techniques. Let us embark on this exciting journey together. Cheers!’

About Makarounas Winery
Makarounas Winery is a family winery located on the beautiful village of Letymbou, a region with a long tradition in vine growing. Letymbou is located 14 kilometres east of the city of Pafos, on the west coast of Cyprus, and the Makarounas family have a viticultural history dating back four generations in the region.

Theodoros Makarounas started the winery in 2016, after completing his studies in Oenology and Viticulture at UC Davis, with the support of his parents Kostas and Eleni, and his two brothers Dimitris and Stelios. He strongly embraced the belief that good wine is made in the vineyard; thus, particular attention is paid to the notion of terroir.

The vineyards cover 25 hectares of land, with new plantings added every year. They are located at an altitude of 400 – 600 metres above sea level. There is a strong Mediterranean influence here as well as considerable rainfall. The combination of surrounding hills, the crystal gypsum, limestone and quartz rich soils, along with the uninterrupted exposure to the winds of the valley, are moderating factors in the local mesoclimate. Makarounas Winery has the privilege of being the only winery in Cyprus that sources grapes solely from their privately-owned vineyards. The family has a long tradition in viticulture and to this day still provide fruit to a considerable number of wineries around Cyprus. The quality of the fruit and production is overseen by Theodoros and he produces terroir driven, distinctive, and top quality wines.

The winery produces wines of ample power but with excellent drinkability, with a focus on indigenous grape varieties of Cyprus and organic viticulture.
