Arômes Sauvages Alicante-Bouschet, Château Viranel 2019

  • France Languedoc Roussillon
This estate, in the heart of the Saint-Chinian appellation, has been in the Bergasse family since the 16th Century. Two highly energetic and capable brothers Nicholas and Arnaud Bergasse, have now taken over full control of the winery from their father and have created an outstanding range of wines and taken this prestigious estate to a new level. The vineyards are situated on the limestone hills and ancient terraces overlooking the Vallée de l`Orb. Here the hot Mediterranean climate is tempered by the north wind ? the Tramontane - from the mountains of the Cévennes. Cool nights help Viranel`s grapes ripen gently.

The Trilogie wines are fantastically fresh and balanced, providing a great introduction to the Viranel style. Rendez-Vous is a charming blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, peppery and bright and extremely drinkable. The amazing Arômes Sauvages is a highly individual "wild" wine made from the ancient Alicante Bouschet variety, sourced from 70-year-old vines. The nose is brimming with pepper, black fruit and ripe crushed thyme and fennel. The boar and rabbit duo depicted on the label perfectly sums up Nicholas and Arnaud`s fun and passionate approach to winemaking. Their top wine, V de Viranel, is made up of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache and is a silky wine with velvety tannins with flavours of blackcurrant and liquorice. These wines perfectly represent a new generation of growers who are taking their family`s traditions and moving them forward in an authentic, but fun and open way.
