Massoc Frères

  • Chile Itata Valley
Massoc Frères was founded in 2015 by the French-Chilean brothers François and Jean-Paul Massoc along with Noëlle Gueneau de Mussy. Their aim was to revive the traditional grape varieties of Chile's southern Itata Valley region. The first vines are said to have arrived here in the 1550s, making this remote region one of the first to be planted with vines in the country. Situated some 500 km south of Santiago, the Pacific Ocean, with its cooling Humboldt current, lies to the west. François and Jean-Paul work hand with small growers who have been tending their vines for generations. Old vines up to 150 years old, vineyards which are worked by horse, hand picking and a deep respect for nature, produce very elegant and refreshing wines which express the character of each vineyard. Fresh and perfumed with crisp acidity, the dry Muscatel is the perfect aperitif wine. The Assemblage, a blend of País and Cinsault, combines juicy red fruit with fine tannins. The premium Grand País stands out for its finesse, depth and structure. ‘It is for me the Pinot Noir of Chile, and without a doubt it reminds me of Burgundy' says François Massoc. Both reds are vinified from whole berries and matured in French oak barrels to add complexity. Delicious in their youth and perfect with food, they also age well.
