La Jasse Castel

La Jasse Castel

La Jasse Castel

  • France Languedoc Roussillon
La Jasse Castel is the vision of a very determined, very energetic ball of fire; Pascale Rivière. She has created one of the most interesting estates in the Languedoc from nothing, picking up piece by piece parcels of vines that she felt had the potential to be something exceptional. Starting in the well known wine village of Montpeyroux, she now has a modest but well equipped winery on the windy Causse outside. This is the heart of the Terasses de Larzac, and France's oldest recorded vineyards. Yields are tiny, and attention to detail essential to get anything out of the struggling vines. Cinsault, Grenache, Carignan and Syrah all have their part to play in the varied parcels. These are hand-made wines, from natural yeasts and with tiny levels of sulphites.

The white El Abanico is an oxidative white of immense concentration and power, and a superb acidity. Definitely one to nurse in a (counterintuitively) large glass, to get the most out of those complex pine-nut and pine resin scents. La Pimpanela is relatively light and feminine, but with great depth and easy, attractive fruit. Wines from round here can be stylistically a bit of a whack in face, but this oozes charm and energy. La Jasse is a blend of barrel aged Syrah and tank aged Grenache. The ensemble is intense, with tight but round tannins and tremendous depth of fruit; always with Pascales hallmark femininity.
