Domus Susak

Domus Susak

Domus Susak

Winemaker Federico Cosulich started his winemaking career producing top quality Prosecco. He went to school in the crumbling but charming village of Collalbrigo where the family winery is, in the heart of the top Rive vineyards of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. His family would holiday on the Croatian island of Susak, a small and very beautiful island on the northern Adriatic coast. In 1989, the Cosulich's acquired an estate on the island where they planted 30 hectares of vines in 1990 and 1991, and they have been producing outstanding Croatian wines with a Venetian influence ever since.

The island was originally known as Sansego, derived from the Greek word ‘Sansegusm' meaning ‘oregano', which grows in abundance on the island. Susak is geologically different from other Adriatic islands in that it is mostly formed of fine sand laid on a limestone rock base. The lack of water on Susak creates a hostile environment for vines, and are relatively isolated and protected from strong winds, and are planted ungrafted. The soil retains moisture well, so the curious drive of the wines have come from the salinity that defines them. The plantings consist of Chardonnay, Moscato, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Refosco. The vines are farmed organically, though they are not certified, and these varieties have been planted in the area for over 200 years.

Federico produces macerated whites and vibrant reds. The white is a delightful blend of Chardonnay, Moscato, and Sauvignon Blanc, and the red comprises Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and Refosco aged in bottle. The wines are saline and fresh with lots of character. Yeasts are indigenous, and with little sulphur used.

The estate includes four luxury apartments above the wine cellar, the perfect location for wine enthusiasts seeking a holiday close to nature.
