Château du Hureau

  • France Loire
Should you happen upon Château du Hureau, it is very likely that proprietors Philippe and Agathe Vatan will be there and working, delighted at the prospect of a break to welcome you to the estate. Located in the heart of the Loire Valley, they produce a charming range of Saumur-Champigny, Saumur Blanc and Coteaux de Saumur; all of which are easily rated amongst the best in their appellations.

Since 2009, this family has committed to organic farming. The vineyards spread over about 20 plots, covering around 20 hectares across the villages of Dampierre sur Loire, Souzay-Champigny and Saumur. While the majority are planted with Cabernet Franc, there is a small holding of Chenin. The soil here is key to these wines as the vineyards are planted on tuffeau. This sedimentary limestone is from the cretacian era, a recognisable stone that you can still see used today in the historical castles and homes. The tuffeau drains well, and during the summer droughts, the vine roots can still find enough humidity to help the grapes ripen well.
