Cascina del Melo

Cascina del Melo

Cascina del Melo

  • Italy
Cascina del Melo is set in the gentle hills of Piedmont's Gavi wine district. In 2003 Giorgio Rossi Cairo bought this stunning 110 hectare estate. About a fifth of it is Cortese and Barbera vineyards, the rest being fields and woodland like oak, chestnut, elderflower and acacia. Today Georgio's daughter Caterina Rossi Cairo and her English husband Tom Dean manage the estate living there with their 3 children. They recently installed an amazing new winery, covering over 2500m2, featuring a large, traditionally built clay wall sheltering the winemaking equipment. Tom works hard to make sure there is life in his soils and you can really taste it in the Gavi di Gavi DOCG. Compare this to a conventionally produced Gavi and this is brimming with vitality. It's an elegant wine but has definite depth of fruit. The Barbera D.O.C. has delicate acidity and a sweetness and complexity of fruit, with an almost Pinot Noir-like side to it. An excellent food wine, particularly for lamb, duck or game, it makes a sophisticated dinner companion. it won't bore you but it also won't spend all night talking about itself.
