Hartenberg Wine Estate
STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA
Hartenberg is nestled on the free draining north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills in the Stellenbosch region, where the Mediterranean climate, cool breezes channelled down the valley from the ocean, and poor gravelly soils are great for grape growing. As a leading member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative in South Africa, they have established various initiatives to protect the 170 hectares
In January 2025, Hartenberg received Scientific Regenerative Viticulture verification by EOV making it the first wine farm in South Africa – and only the second worldwide – to achieve this certification. Through innovative regenerative practices, scientific verification and measurable outcomes, Hartenberg not only manages its environmental impact but also provides a powerful example of how regenerative farming methods can transform agriculture, restore ecosystems, and produce exceptional wines, setting a new benchmark for regenerative viticulture. Core regenerative viticulture principles at Hartenberg include cover crops, holistically controlled livestock grazing, minimum-till methods, organic composting, eliminating chemical pesticides and fertilisers, and enhancing biodiversity for a balanced ecosystem.
