Edi Simčič

GORIŠKA BRDA, SLOVENIA

Widely considered one of Slovenia’s finest winemakers, Edi Simčič built a legacy that now lives on through his son and grandsons. Since founding the family estate in 1990 in the heart of Goriška Brda, Edi nurtured it with patience and precision, crafting terroir-driven wines that became proudly emblematic of Slovenia. His philosophy—gentle handling, meticulous ageing, and an unwavering respect for the land—produced wines of profound complexity and identity.
Though Edi sadly passed away in 2024, his vision is far from finished. Having worked alongside his father for many years, Aleks now leads the estate, while the next generation—his sons Jure and Jakob—are stepping forward. Guided by their grandfather’s wisdom and their father’s experience, they bring fresh energy and perspective to the vineyard and winemaking, preparing to shape the future of the estate while safeguarding its soul.

The Simčič story mirrors that of their homeland. Goriška Brda endured fascist rule under Mussolini and later the strictures of Communist Yugoslavia, which suppressed agricultural freedom. It was only after Slovenia’s independence in 1991 that the family could truly pursue their calling, transforming a modest 3.5-hectare vineyard into the internationally lauded estate it is today. Now covering roughly 15 hectares across Fojana and Kozana, the vineyards sit on sedimentary and karst soils shaped by the Burja wind and proximity to both sea and Alps.
From 2026 the estate will be certified organic, a natural step in its long commitment to sustainability—dry farming, hand-harvesting, and minimal intervention remain central. Whites are fermented in barrel with indigenous yeasts, reds see extended skin contact and careful oak ageing; each wine reflects the same balance of patience and precision that defined Edi’s approach, while also hinting at the next generation’s hand.

Today, Edi’s gentleness and rigour remain at the heart of every bottle, but it is Aleks, Jure, and Jakob who carry the story forward. Together, they show that the Simčič name is not only timeless and revered, but evolving—proof of the remarkable potential of Slovenian terroir, in the hands of three generations.
