Domaine Ostertag
ALSACE, FRANCE
Arthur Ostertag is the third generation of his family to create wines from these lands. A relative newcomer to winemaking at the time, it was his grandfather who founded the estate in 1966 and bit by bit, worked the land until vines were thriving. André, Arthur’s father, took the helm in 1982 and Domaine Ostertag became recognised for the quality wines it is known for today. André is nothing short of a revolutionary winemaker and arguably Alsace’s most famous and respected. He was a pioneer, pushing the appellation’s boundaries. In an act of rejection against the official classifications dictated by the A.O.C., he made up his own categories, though this labelling has now changed in line with that of the region.
Fast forward three decades, and the winemaking rests in the very capable hands of Arthur, who brings his own creativity and ingenuity to the range. He has worked tirelessly over the last few years to bring together the best possible team for viticulture and winemaking. Arthur continues to practice biodynamic viticulture, as his father did, and manages each of the 75 plots (13 hectares in total, across five villages) individually. He looks for the nuance of terroir rather than the typicity of a grape varietal. He remains in a constant state of experimentation, with the aim of coaxing the ultimate expression of fruit. Arthur’s instincts are as passionate and strong as those that came before him and the wines continue to evolve in a way that honours the appellation.
