Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini
BURGUNDY, GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, FRANCE
After 10 years working on the family vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, Florence Heresztyn-Mazzini started her own domaine in 2012. The vineyards cover 6 hectares across the villages of Gevrey Chambertin, Morey-Saint Denis and Chambolle-Musigny, and are unique in having incredibly old vines. Florence is one of a handful of growers who follow an approach known as phytotherapy (vines are treated with natural plant remedies) which she combines with biodynamic methods to minimise interventions in the vineyard. As she explains, her role is to protect ‘the life of the terroir’ and ‘to feel, to understand, to better decide.’ Careful use of whole bunches and minimal sulphur produce deliciously pure wines. Bottling is without fining or filtration according to the lunar calendar. Apart from
the Bourgogne Rouge, the wines are classified organic. They conducted a green harvest in July and August 2023 ending up with a yield of 40hl/ha. Picking began 4th September as they were worried about a loss of freshness.
Picking at the right time, and following their instincts, was a key factor for Florence in 2023.
