Javi began making wine for his family’s estate, Vallobera, some decades ago. From the outset, his enthusiasm, boundless energy, and determined spirit leave a lasting impression.

Despite the constraints of DOCa Rioja, Javi’s adventurous nature drove him to push boundaries in both viticulture and winemaking at Vallobera, always seeking ways to innovate and improve. However, his vision for the future of Rioja—one that embraces both tradition and evolution—ultimately led him to branch out on his own. In 2014, he founded Bodegas Javier San Pedro, though the first vintage produced in his own facility was released in 2018.

As Javi himself puts it, “We are an innovative winery with a young team, aiming to surprise with wines that break from the traditional Rioja mould. Our wines must tell a story—singular, authentic expressions of our land, crafted with the utmost respect yet through a dynamic and contemporary lens.”

We felt that our much-loved Rioja offering would be enriched by a producer from Rioja Alavesa, where the limestone-rich soils at the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains create the perfect conditions for wines of freshness and finesse. At the same time, Javi brings a modern perspective that aligns with today’s evolving Rioja landscape.

His range delivers exceptional value, from the vibrantly expressive Cueva de Lobos wines, where varietal character and freshness shine, to the Viuda Negra collection, offering greater complexity and depth. The portfolio is further elevated by a selection of single-vineyard wines, including Villahuercos, a distinctive Tempranillo Blanco, and El Arca de Asa, sourced from clay and gravel soils in Lanciego.
