Domaine Jacques Carillon

About the Producer

Region: Puligny-Montrachet

The Carillon family has been making wine in Puligny-Montrachet since the 16th century, beginning with Jehan Carillon in 1520. Jacques Carillon joined his father in the family vineyard in 1980. In 2010, Jacques and his wife Sylvia founded Domaine Jacques Carillon with 5.25 hectares of vines, primarily in the village of Puligny-Montrachet. Eschewing the use of herbicides and pesticides and tending everything by hand, they prune meticulously and green harvest when necessary. In the cellar, a restrained use of oak, with only 15-20% new barrels, keeps the wines fresh and pure. Jacques reported a fairly straightforward 2020 vintage with no frost, an excellent flowering, enough water despite a hot summer (‘the wines were never thirsty’) and an early harvest yielding excellent quality fruit. Jacques’ wonderful 2020s are the perfect expression of the Domaine’s terroir driven style which combines incredible precision and intensity with an energetic minerality.

Tasting Notes

By James Snoxell, Fine Wine Buyer

2020 Chassagne-Montrachet
£215 per 6 bottle case in bond

From relatively young vines planted in 2013, just south of the village, this is broader textured than the Puligny-Montrachet. Soft yellow fruits and orchard apples on the palate are balanced by a chalky mineral note. Shows surprising energy and length for young vines. Drink from 2023.

2020 Puligny-Montrachet
£230 per 6 bottle case in bond

Produced from eleven parcels scattered throughout the appellation, this has a lively sweet citrus bouquet with a hint of oyster shell minerality. Perfectly balanced on the palate with bright fresh fruit, the 2020 shows plenty of length and direction. Drink from 2023.

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Canet
£425 per 6 bottle case in bond

A small parcel planted in 1973 at the northern end of the appellation on the border with Meursault, this has a layered bouquet of yellow stone fruits and summer blossoms with supple citrus flavours. Shows lovely depth and freshness. Drink from 2024.

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières
£425 per 6 bottle case in bond
Located just south of Les Referts on the slope, this Les Perrières has an expressive bouquet with ripe citrus notes. Very flattering on the palate, juicy green fruits are underpinned by a vibrant mineral freshness with a seasoning of salt on the finish. Shows great energy and length. Drink from 2025.

2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts
£425 per 6 bottle case in bond

Showing an added layer of complexity, this has a sophisticated bouquet of lemons and honeysuckle with a hint of white truffle leading to an intense palate with bright citrus fruit and a note of freshly cut ginger. Very attractive and lively with plenty of vigour and intensity. Drink from 2025.

2020 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet
£660 per 3 bottle case in bond

A magnificent wine revealing wonderful depth and balance, it has an elegant floral bouquet with hints of white truffle and smoke. This intensity is balanced by mouthwatering citrus and mineral notes leading to a long finish with subtle acacia blossom scents. It will need a good ten years in bottle. Drink from 2030.
