Weingut Weszeli is located in Langenlois, a famous wine village located on the river Kamp where it winds its way down to the Danube at Krems. Here, there is a patchwork of Cru vineyards which have been instrumental in putting Austria on the map as a source of world-class white wines. A former city-slicker, Davis Weszeli left corporate life in search of something new with the goal of feeling closer to nature. He discovered his calling in the form of this Kamptal winery in 2011, and since then, he has been on a mission to create authentic wines while upholding his commitment to sustainability and organic viticulture, and all the while following the principle coined by Davis himself. ‘Terrafactum’, the importance of the unique nature of the earth and terroir of Kamptal.

Davis makes impressive Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, the two grapes that he feels best suit the climate and soils of Kamptal. He makes three levels of Grüner Veltliner. The Grüner Veltliner ‘Felix’ introduces us to the grape in its simplest, most charming form, as he puts it. ‘Austria in a glass’. Next, in the ‘Terrace’ range ‘Davis’ equivalent to a village level wine – is Grüner Veltliner Langenlois, named after the winery`s home village and where the vineyard parcels for this wine are located.

Also in the Terrace range is the Riesling Loiserberg from a single vineyard site, the most Northern, highest and coolest on gneiss soil. The wine is bone dry with scintillating acidity, carrying all of the trademark qualities that make this grape so revered worldwide. From the 2017 vintage onwards this vineyard was classed as Premier Cru and will carry this classification on the label. At the top sits the `Terroir` range which includes a single vineyard Grüner Veltliner Käferberg ÖTW, from a Premier Cru site that is destined to be promoted to Grand Cru once the classification is finalised. A taste of this wine is a fine example of what this grape is truly capable of in the right hands. Weszeli’s highest quality wines are cared for and matured for a minimum of 60 months. 30 months in barrel, followed by 30 months in bottle.

Davis encourages wildlife and biodiversity in the vineyard, and is particularly fond of the native hoopoe bird. All of the wines are attractively labelled with an illustration of a local animal or insect, reflecting the estate’s dedication to working alongside nature, and providing natural shelter for native creatures. In turn, they all do their bit to protect the grapes, whether through natural fertilisation, biodiversification of the soil, pollination or pest control.
