Torri Cantine

  • Italy
Torri Cantine was originally a cooperative started in 1966, but it has since become a small private estate with around 25 hectares of mature vines. Converted fully to organic wine production, they have sites dotted through the foothills below the impressive Gran Sasso mountain, lying between 100 to 300 metres above sea level. It is rare to find Trebbiano that is pure, clean and precise and that has any depth of character, but here it is. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo “4 20”! A great ambassador for Cantine Torri, with acid grip and oodles of tangy fruit. This is a joy to drink and really versatile with a lot of modern, Mediterranean-inspired food. Balance is Pecorino's weakness (like a lot of aromatic varieties) but we feel the Pecorino “4 20” is really special, demonstrating great poise, concentration and plain likeability. It will handle gentle spiciness like curry leaves, lime and chilli - its citrus freshness seems to push through nicely. Despite being picked well into October, the dark rosé Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo “4 20” has nice grip and amazing purity. It spends 6-7 hours on the skins, which is enough to give it a distinct colour and some real complexity. The versatility of this darker style is amazing, we highly recommend it as an accompaniment for cured meats and terrine. The super ripe and velvety Montepulciano d'Abruzzo “4 20” also has a little tannin and bitterness to bolster what seems like a wall of dark cherry fruit. Such a joy to drink!
