About the Wines
Takeaway: Fish & Chips
Wine: Crémant de Bourgogne, Domaine Bersan NV
Sparkling wine with fish & chips is one of the absolute best food and wine pairings, and a real trade favourite. This Crémant is made organically from Chablis grapes with very low sulphites, and has great minerality and acidity which wonderfully cuts through the richness of the batter and balances the fish. What better way to start the weekend?
Takeaway: Vietnamese Pho
Wine: Riesling Trocken, Weingut Schwarztrauber 2019
This German Riesling from Pfalz has just a touch of ripeness in perfect harmony with it’s natural zest. This results in a superbly versatile wine for matching all kinds of South-East Asian cuisine, especially with its ability to cope with a moderate amount of chilli. Vietnamese Pho is a cracking pairing on account of it’s rich broth, but don’t let us stop you from ordering dim sum!
Wine: Trilogie Viognier, Château Viranel 2019
With Viognier’s rich mouthfeel, pronounced apricots and concentrated aromas of white flower, this makes a bold enough match for your takeaway curry. Nor is there too much acidity here in this example from the south of France to exacerbate the spice in the food. Instead a rounded, coating waxiness on the palate, which should go perfectly with any curry… perhaps hold off the Vindaloo!
Wine: Rosat, Herència Altés 2019
If you are taking a healthier approach to the new year, you might be after a lighter delivery of sushi. In which case this organic dry rosé, from Terra Alta in the south of Catalunya, provides a great balance; it is crisp enough to let delicate white fish show through, while the wild strawberry-fruited core will also sit beautifully with tuna and salmon.
Wine: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 4 20, Torri Cantine 2019
Incredibly approachable organic Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, smooth on the palate, with a dark cherry core and a savoury black olive finish. No points for guessing the obligatory pizza topping here, a classic Napoli would work perfectly. Why stop at pizza? Crack this open with any tomato-based pasta delivery.
Takeaway: A humble hamburger
Wine: The Whole Shebang Cuvée XIII, Bedrock Wine Co NV
If ordering the classic hamburger, then nothing is more ‘Americana’ than this cuvée from Bedrock. This multi-vintage blend is made up from predominantly old-vine Zinfandel. Full in body, alcohol, flavour, fruit, it doesn’t matter how you choose to dress your burger, the Whole Shebang will more than match it.
