El Jardin de las Iguales Blanco, Bodegas Frontonio 2017
This is a rare, old vine Macabeo planted blue slate soils in 1898 and comes from a small 1.4ha parcel at 700m altitude. 36 hours on skins adds texture and fragrant lift. This wine is best described as a love child of Assyrtiko and Riesling, with Burgundian accents. The nose shows enchanting aromas of fragrant lemon blossoms and salty air breezes with subtle hints of fennel and beeswax. There is a strong mineral current running through; salty and flinty whispers of blue slate soils, so rare in this part of Spain. On the palate, the wine is tight, linear and focused with the sort of depth and concentration of flavour reminiscent of fine Burgundy. Saline and lemony flavours mingle with sweeter tones of grilled nuts and toast from oak integration. The finish is long and precise, lingering. This wine is still very young and primary and shows fantastic potential for ageing.
