About the Wines
Cuvée Royale Brut, Joseph Perrier NV
Joseph Perrier was founded back in 1825, and is now in its 6th generation of family ownership under the flamboyant stewardship of Benjamin Fournon. It was one of the original 24 Grand Marque, recognised for its reputation and prestige, indeed the reason for the name Cuvée Royale reflects the house’s history of being supplier to Queen Victoria and then Edward VII. An almost equal proportion of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, from estate owned vineyards, and aged for an average of 3 years before bottling and release. The house style is fresh, evenly balanced and incredibly approachable, showing delicate apple and pear notes, floral, and with a fine mousse.
Sauvignon Blanc, Ataraxia 2019
Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa
Kevin Grant has helped to put the little known wine region of Hemel-en-Aarde, right down on South Africa’s southern coast, onto the international wine map. This unique maritime cool climate terroir produces exceptionally mouth-watering wines of incredible finesse and depth. His Sauvignon Blanc is supremely elegant, with a crisp citrus backbone and chalky texture.
Sancerre Florès, Domaine Vincent Pinard 2018
From one Sauvignon Blanc magician to another, Vincent Pinard is widely known as the best producer in Sancerre. Along with his sons Florent and Clément, Vincent crafts some of the most exciting Sauvignon Blanc to be found anywhere in the world from unparalleled vineyard sites, using organic viticulture, excessively low yields and modern winemaking techniques. Ultra-zesty, the definition of minerality in a wine, and a long, persistent finish.
Petit Chablis, Domaine Sébastien Dampt 2018
Sébastien is an innovative and talented winemaker based in Milly on the western side of the valley in Chablis, giving very energetic and mineral wines. Careful vineyard management, minimum filtration, and low use of sulphites, results in an amazingly pure, precise, steely Chablis full of tension and concentration.
Benufet, Herència Altés 2018
Terra Alta, Spain
Another region that has been hoisted onto the world stage in part by Núria Altés of Herència Altés, Terra Alta in the south of Catalunya, is coming out of the shadow of neighbouring Priorat. Here Garnatxa (AKA Garnacha/Grenache) of all colours is king, but Núria’s Benufet made from Garnatxa Blanca is a real highlight, showing how rich and elegant a white wine can be while eschewing any use of oak; stone fruits in a abundance and a luxurious creamy texture.
Chardonnay, Black Stallion 2018
Napa Valley, USA
Based in Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll district, Black Stallion owns 32 hectares covering some of Napa’s most prestigious vineyards, with a stellar reputation for small-batch, age-worthy and expressive wines. The estate Chardonnay shows aromas of yellow pear and hints of apricot, apple and oak. Vanilla aromatics from oak and floral perfume from the fruit precede ripe fruit flavours balanced with bright freshness.
Inspiration Côtes de Provence Rosé, Château de Berne 2019
An historical property dating back to the 11th century with its founding by templars, and over three hundred year’s tradition of winemaking. Now with over 500 hectares of combined vineyard and nature reserve, a 5 star hotel and spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant Château de Berne is one of the most impressive estates in all Provence. The vineyards are planted further north in the cooler foothills of the Haut-Var, away from most rosé production around Saint-Tropez, lending supreme elegance and complexity to their wine. A bright bouquet of delicate red berry fruits and notes of wild flowers. Fresh and dry with a crisp finish, a lovely palate of redcurrants and strawberries, with lingering notes of Mediterranean herbs
Morgon, Cuvée Classique, Jean Foillard 2018
Jean Foillard can legitimately claim living legend status in Beaujolais – not that he would – such is the cult status, and limited availability of his wines. He espouses staunchly traditional and uncommercial practices in the vineyard and the cellar: use of old vines, organic principles, late harvesting, rigorous grape sorting, no filtration and minimal or no sulphur. These are natural, complex, earthy and astoundingly expressive.
Estate Pinot Noir, Ten Minutes By Tractor 2016
Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia
No one can claim to have done more to teach the world about the varying terroirs of Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne, than Martin Spedding of Ten Minutes By Tractor. His Pinot Noir are recognised as some of the most foremost examples in all of Australia. Cooled by southerly winds coming up from the Southern Ocean, grown sustainably, and vinified with a delicate touch that lets the purity of fruit show through. Driven by Cherry fruit with a ripple of vanilla and tomato leaf, with a hint of jam and a spicy finish.
Single Vineyard Malbec, Bodegas Luigi Bosca 2018
The Arizu family of Bodega Luigi Bosca has been making wine in Mendoza since 1901. Over the years they have accumulated a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge of the region’s incredible variety of altitudes, soils and microclimates. Four generations later Bodega Luigi Bosca is still very much a family business, currently run by Alberto Arizo Jr, one of Argentina’s most respected wine figures. They are also one of Argentina’s leading estates, famed for having some of Mendoza’sbest vineyard sites, and their involvement in the creation of Argentina’s first appellations, Luján de Cuyo DOC. The single vineyard Malbec here is deep, voluptuous, smoky with fine tannins and great ageing potential.
Wallace, Glaetzer Wines 2017
Barossa Valley, Australia
This family-owned boutique winery was founded in 1995 and dedicates itself to the production of super-premium, site-specific red wine made in small volumes. Originally from Germany, the Glaetzer family settled in Australia in the late 19th century, and were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley. Today it is run by internationally acclaimed winemaker Ben Glaetzer who is responsible for driving the brand’s considerable loyal following. The lovely Wallace is a blend of Shiraz and Grenache showing redcurrant, clove and spice on the nose, fresh juiciness on the palate, combined with supple tannins and pronounced flavours of liquorice and mulberry.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Miocène, Domaine Grand Veneur 2018
Rhône Valley, France
The Jaume family have been making wine here since 1826 and still own the same vineyards; some of the vines are now over 100 years-old. Christophe Jaume is the sixth generation of his family to make wine at this domaine, now considered one of the most renowned estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Ripe black fruit, cherry and spice box, elegant tannins and a long, luxurious finish.
