Domaine AF Gros is owned by Anne-Françoise who inherited vineyards in Savigny, Vosne-Romanée, ChambolleMusigny, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Anne-Françoise’s talented daughter and son, Caroline and Mathias, have now taken charge and continue to make extremely classic wines. Maturation in new wood depends on the wine (40% for villages, 66% for Premier Cru, 100% for Grand Cru) but is an increasingly subtle influence on the wines. Caroline reported an excellent 2020 vintage with very healthy and concentrated grapes though yields were low. To protect the bunches from the sunshine, the vines were topped at 1.5m and leaf stripping was avoided.
In the cellar, the main challenge for the reds was ‘to keep soft and silky tannins’ which is why they avoided pigeage. The proportion of whole bunches was also increased to 30% to 40% for the Pommard 1er Crus, Vosne Romanée aux Réas, Echezeaux and Richebourg. ‘A beautiful vintage’ according to Caroline, the wines are intense and richly textured, yet fresh and invigorating with a fine mineral structure.

2020 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Blanc

A new wine in the line-up, this has an energetic citrus bouquet with smoky mineral aromas. Elegant stone fruits on the palate are balanced by a mouthwatering lemon zest note leading to a refreshing mineral finish. Showing impressive tension, this is well worth considering. Drink from 2023.
2020 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits

The Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge is an elegantly balanced and very attractive wine with juicy red cherry fruit flavours and supple tannins. Give this a year or two in bottle. Drink from 2023.
2020 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Guettes

Located east of Savigny-Lès-Beaune, the word ‘Guettes’ may refer to the higher elevation of the vineyard, once a vantage point. Appealing hedgerow fruits on the nose lead to a bright palate with supple summer fruit characters. Drink from 2024.
2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corvées AF Gros

Delicate and refined, an aromatic bouquet of wild red berries leads to a refined palate with lifted strawberry and rose petal notes. Beautifully defined with fine mineral tannins and lovely clarity of fresh fruit, this will be delicious in a few years. Drink from 2024.
2020 Chambolle-Musigny

A lovely Chambolle from five parcels. A lively bouquet of raspberries and sweet cassis leads to a silky textured palate with supple red cherry flavours. Offering lovely balance and length, this should be approachable quite soon. Drink from 2024.
2020 Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas

The best of their three Vosne villages wines, the 2020 offers succulent cassis and dark strawberry aromas infused with subtle spice and sweet leather notes. On the palate, black cherry fruits and moreish tannins are balanced by an energetic mineral freshness. 35% whole bunch. Drink from 2025.
2020 Pommard 1er Cru Les Arvelets

Les Arvelets lies below Les Charmots to the west of the village. A wine of great character, delicate red berry and scented strawberry notes vie for attention with darker forest fruit flavours. Quite complex and very appealing, but needing time, it will be wonderful in a few years. Drink from 2025.
2020 Echezeaux Grand Cru

A wine for ageing, this has a rich bouquet of ripe plum and dark redcurrant fruits with subtle notes of tobacco, leather and spice. On the palate, intense dark fruits are framed by firm tannins. Seriously structured with impressive depth, it will need at least 8 years in the cellar. Drink from 2028.
2020 Richebourg Grand Cru

Without a doubt one of the most sought-after of all Burgundy wines, this impressively refined and intense Richebourg has an enveloping bouquet of blackberries and layers of cassis fruit leading to a silky-smooth palate with seamless tannins. Beautifully balanced and showing incredible length, this majestic Grand Cru is going to require serious cellaring. Superb. Drink from 2032.
