About the Producer
Region: Beaune
A talented and dynamic winemaker, Benjamin Leroux made a name for himself at Domaine du Comte Armand where he was general manager until 2014. Despite this he found time to launch his own label in 2007 and now produces wines from over 50 vineyards. Apart from 4 ha owned by the Domaine, grapes are purchased from trusted organic or biodynamic growers. The harvest started on 6 September in 2019. As with most producers, he experienced a significant reduction in crop due to isolated frosts, a poor flowering and dry summer weather, the biggest impact being on the whites. Benjamin Leroux’s tastings are always very informative and I was thankful to have had the opportunity to taste his marvellous 2019s, a stunning range of vibrant whites and finely crafted reds which show lovely intensity and freshness.

2019 Saint-Romain Sous le Château

From a cool terroir located on rocky limestone soils, this is a very refreshing white with a lively bouquet of honeysuckle and white flowers followed by a juicy palate with sweet lemon fruits. On the finish, an attractive gunflint note provides great tension and balance. An impressive showing. Drink from 2022.
2019 Meursault

From domaine vineyards scattered around the appellation, including 20% from Blagny, this is a very well-balanced and focused Meursault. A combination of lemon zest and juicy citrus fruits, along with scents of white flowers and fresh bread, leads to a long and satisfying finish. Drink from 2022.
2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embazées

A higher vineyard with stony soils, on the appellation’s southern border, this is an expressive Chassagne with bright yellow fruit aromas and a juicy palate. Scents of flower blossom and a hint of white smoke add an extra layer of complexity. Drink from 2023.
2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines

Beautifully balanced, expressive and delightfully complex, the 2019 has a palate of green apples and citrus fruits with a hint of apricot and bitter orange. Juicy fruit flavours are balanced by a fresh mineral character and a zesty citrus note. This will be delicious in a few years. Drink from 2024.
2019 Meursault 1er Cru La Pièce Sous le Bois

Located higher up the hill on a cool terroir, just below the woods, this is a very attractive and complex wine with subtle citrus fruits, a pithy grapefruit character and delicate notes of white smoke. A wine which is both intense and very elegant, the 2019 is an impressive showing. Drink from 2023.
2019 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières-Dessous

From a special parcel in the lower sector of Genevrières, clay soils lend a little more richness to this wine. Broader on the nose than the Genevrières, with notes of white peach and stone fruit, the palate is succulent and fresh with lively lemon zest and orchard fruit notes. Only available in magnums, this is a classy cuvée. Drink from 2023.
2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Vergelesses

The first vintage for Benjamin Leroux, this shows immediate appeal with its aromatic bouquet of wild hedgerow fruits and crushed strawberries. On the palate, dark redcurrant flavours are balanced by fine tannins. A classic and highly recommended wine. Drink from 2023.
2019 Gevrey-Chambertin

Mostly from Les Sevrées and La Justice, with the rest from Brochon, this is a classic Gevrey displaying crunchy strawberry and raspberry fruit flavours. Fine tannins and fresh acidity provide lovely balance. Drink from 2023.
